Tales Frey and Katiana Rangel, Amalgam – NYC Connection | In Process, 2023. Video. Edition: 6
Amalgam – NYC Connection is a work in which two performers from Brazil meet in NYC to create work after over two decades of their first collaboration (“Hoje é Dia de Rock”, José Vicente, Brazil, 2001).
The piece has clothing as a central approach, exploring through clothing and accessories countless gender identities that are not submissive to binary conventions, presenting forms that sometimes escape human contours, mixing dance and sculpture. It expands the bodies and the shapes they make with the aspiration of bringing something open and unexpected, even for the performers themselves.
For this creation, the artists activated some of their authorial creations. Tales Frey resorted to his “Amálgama” (2023) and “Fio Condutor” (2020), while Katiana Rangel revisited “Suspended” (2016).
The creation process began on 06/20/2023 at the LMCC Arts Center on Governors Island and culminated in a presentation at Judson Memorial Church on 06/28/2023 with financial support from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
The video – which documents the creation process – presents the rehearsal itself as yet another rite of passage for Tales Frey’s birthday in an artistic/aesthetic ritual, being part of the “Memento Mori” series started in 2013.
